Hyperkalemia in Patients with Kidney Diseases
Scientific name of Potassium salt is Potassium Chloride. It is a natural substance that helps nervous cells, muscle cells and heart work normally. At present, it is used as an additive in food industry in order to substitute the decreased saltiness from the decreased of Sodium salt. Therefore, it is apparent that low Sodium seasoning products of various brands sold in the market contain Potassium salt to add saltiness. However, such products may not suit everyone in your family. If anyone has certain symptoms such as kidney failure, the blood will have great amounts of waste and the body will have hyperkalemia or a great amount of Potassium that is retained in the body. Thus, that patient cannot vent excessive Potassium that has been consumed out of the body. In addition, any person that has too take certain medications such as medicines to decrease blood pressure or diuretics medicines of certain types and takes additional Potassium can have too great an amount of Potassium that leads to hyperkalemia, cardiac arrhythmia or even death. Therefore, patients with kidney failure have to limit their consumption of salt. To use low Sodium seasoning products that substitute the saltiness with Potassium should be based on the awareness of possibility of hyperkalemia.
Even tough there have been academic works that suggest that Potassium can decrease high blood pressure in people who do not have kidney diseases, the suggestion is that one should consume Potassium from natural sources such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains that Thai people have been consuming. It is inadvisable to consume additional synthetic Potassium such as Potassium in seasoning ingredients.
